Wig caps, also called wig liners, are small cloth or mesh coverings that can be worn under your wig for an extra layer of protection. They come in multiple colors appropriate for blonde, brown, and black wigs, although when appropriately placed, they are completely hidden. So why do so many wig wearers consider them an essential accessory?
Why wear a cap?
Many wig owners purchased their first hairpiece because of hair loss from chemotherapy. This procedure not only makes your natural hair fall out, but can also make your scalp very sensitive. Wearing a soft cap adds a soothing barrier between the inside of the wig and your head, making many clients more comfortable.
Cotton and cotton-poly blends are also able to wick moisture away from the scalp. Mesh caps, which are made of netting instead of solid fabric, give wig wearers a foundation upon which to secure their wig with bobby pins for an extra-tight hold. All caps have the added benefit of securing loose hairs in place and flattening the hair on your crown to make your wig fit more securely.
How do I put my cap on?
Caps are very easy to wear and require little preparation save that of flattening or braiding your hair back tightly. To put your cap on, simply follow these steps:
- Touch the front of the inside of the cap to the middle of your forehead
- Pull the back of the cap over your head and down to the nape of your neck.
- Push any stray hairs underneath before applying your wig.
